The Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Professor Godwin Onu, has
called for a special fund to be made available to Tertiary Institutions
to generate their own electricity through wastes as an alternative
public power supply.
Professor Onu, who made the call at the Polytechnic during a public
lecture to mark the end of his tenure, believes that such would help
solve the perennial power problem being faced in the country.
The Rector stated that the large amount of human and material wastes being generated at the Institution, when properly channeled, could provide the electricity needs of the academic community and its environs, even at a cheaper rate.Otuu Obinna

He also advocated the conversion of, at least, one Polytechnic in all the six geopolitical zones of the country into a Polytechnic-University to help entrench training and learning at middle manpower level and extend the opportunities for in-depth research in technology.
Professor Onu, who is reputed for introducing the full computer- based tests, CBT form of examination in semester assessment for students, also called on the Federal Government to provide special funding for tertiary institutions to enable them fully develop their ICT capacities.
The outgoing Rector stated that computer-based assessment has become a tested way of eradicating examination malpractice from the system. In a lecture tagged “Science, Technology and Innovation In Nigeria: the Role of Polytechnics,” a Guest Lecturer, Air Vice Marshall Humphrey Okpala, called on Polytechnics to retain the seventy per cent preference for admission of students in science and technology-based areas. Air Vice Marshall Okpala, who is also a directing staff at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru near Jos, regretted that Nigeria has not invested much in developing the science and technology sector and said that the only way forward will be an intensified political and policy support of the country to become self sustaining which can only be assured through science and technology innovations.
